DESCRIPTION:I WANNA NEW DRUG \nPresented by Dr. Thomas Viola – I Wanna New Drug and The Sweet Tooth Ironies \nThis program will provide participants with an update and overview of selected new FDA-approved prescription drugs for the past several years. Throughout the program\, special emphasis will be given to those new drugs whose actions\, side effects\, or interactions with other drugs may impact dental therapy.\nUpon successful completion of this program\, participants will be able to:\n• Identify selected newly approved prescription medications of the past several years and review their mechanisms of action\, principle therapeutic indications\, adverse reactions and drug interactions.\n• Discuss the clinical dental considerations of these new medications and their potential impact on dental therapy. \nTHE SWEET TOOTH IRONIES\nThis program will provide participants with an overview of diabetes mellitus\, the arsenal of medications used in its management and the impact of both the disease and its treatment on dental therapy. Specific emphasis will be placed on recommended dental treatment modifications necessary for diabetic patients.\nUpon successful completion of this program\, participants will be able to:\n• Describe the pathophysiology of diabetes and its various management and treatment options.\n• Describe the complex interplay of diabetes\, systemic inflammation and periodontal disease.\n• Explain the ultimate impact of diabetes and its treatment on dental therapy. \nTHE SPEAKER\nIn addition to his daily practice of the profession of pharmacy\, Tom Viola also serves the professions of dentistry\, dental hygiene and dental assisting as an educator\, published writer and professional speaker.  Tom is a member of the faculty of seven dental hygiene and dental assisting programs\, as well as several national board exam review courses. He is a contributor to several dental professional journals\, with columns appearing regularly in AGD Impact and RDH Magazine. In addition\, Tom currently serves as the Subject Matter Expert for Mosby’s Dental Drug Reference.\nTom has presented hundreds of continuing education courses\, nationally and internationally\, in the areas of dental pharmacology and local anesthesia.
