SUMMARY:Patient\, Clinician & Practice Benefits of Hard & Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry
DESCRIPTION:Course Title has changed…. \n“Patient\, Clinician and Practice Benefits of Hard and Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry” \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nLasers have been a part of the dental armamentarium for over a quarter of a century. The important question facing the modern dentist is… “Are dental lasers worth the hype or are they just expensive tools that do what I already do with my handpiece and scalpel?” This course will show the advantages of lasers for both the practitioner and the patient. It will give the dentist the information needed to make a financially and clinically sound decision regarding implementing lasers into their practice. All major dental laser wavelengths will be presented and the advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed. Clinical cases will be presented to show the role of lasers in every discipline of dentistry. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss the basic science behind lasers and tissue interactions; distinguish between the many dental laser wavelengths and their advantages and limitations.\nRecognize the laser’s role in minimally invasive dentistry and identify laser procedures across all dental disciplines.\n\n. \nTHE SPEAKER \nDr. Steve Pohlhaus is a 1989 graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School. He completed his general practice residency at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs hospital in 1990. Dr Pohlhaus has had a private practice in Linthicum\, Maryland for 25 years and he also taught part time in Oral Diagnosis at the University of Maryland from 1992-2012. Dr. Pohlhaus has been using lasers in his dental practice for 15 years. He has experience in multiple laser wavelengths. Dr. Pohlhaus has been teaching about lasers in dentistry since 2004 and has trained dentists for three different companies. His dental practice is focused on laser dentistry where he uses laser to benefit his patients across all disciplines. \n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Hidden Pearls in Practice
DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION \nOne of the greatest challenges a general practitioner faces\, is how to have the time\, resources and training to solve complex dental problems within their own practice.  Yet\, more and more\, patients would rather not be referred out to have their dental needs met.  Additionally for a general practice to meet its full potential the execution of more complex treatment is a must.  Dr. Cranham will present the Dawson protocols to solve a myriad of complex dental problems with special emphasis on evaluation\, diagnosis and treatment of the worn dentition\, as well as looking at the terminal dentition when the “all on four/five” implant solution is the best option. \n  \nYou will learn: \n\nHow dentistry is changing\, and why having a “usual and customary” practice can actually put you at risk.\nHow to position your practice to take it to its full potential\, and why this could actually be the best time EVER to be a restorative dentist.\nWhy tooth wear becomes harder and harder to fix\, the longer it goes on.\nHow to diagnose the specific cause of wear\, along with the specific protocol to solve the problem.\nHow to treatment plan the terminal dentition for an “all on four/five” solution\, and how to know if you should be doing a hybrid\, or a full arch zirconia restoration.\nHow to choose the best material/porcelain system for the esthetic outcome you desire.\nCommunication skills to help increase case acceptance for more complex cases.\n\nTHE SPEAKER \nDr. Cranham founded Cranham Dental Seminars\, which provides lectures\, mobile programs\, and intensive hands-on experiences to dentists around the world. In 2008\, Cranham Dental Seminars merged with THE DAWSON ACADEMY\, a world-famous continuing education facility based in St. Petersburg\, Florida. As The Dawson Academy’s acting Clinical Director\, Dr. Cranham is involved with many of the courses and provides continuing education to dental professionals across the globe. He spends approximately two-thirds of his time in private practice and the other third as an educator. He believes this balance keeps him on the leading edge of both disciplines. \nDr. John C. Cranham is a highly respected and renowned dentist in Chesapeake\, VA. At his state-of-the-art office\, he delivers unsurpassed general dentistry\, cosmetic dentistry\, and restorative dentistry\, including TMJ THERAPY and DENTAL IMPLANT SERVICES. He uses his vast experience and expansive knowledge to create healthy\, natural-looking smiles. \nDr. Cranham was an honors graduate of the Medical College of Virginia in 1988. He’s an internationally recognized speaker on the esthetic principles of smile design\, contemporary occlusal concepts\, treatment planning\, restoration selection\, digital photography\, laboratory communication\, and happiness and fulfillment in dentistry.

SUMMARY:Using Digital Dentistry for Predictable Comprehensive Care
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Kevin Kwiecien \nSponsored by Patterson Dental and Centric Bank \n  \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nTrue or False? Comprehensive dentistry is too hard. CAD/CAM dentistry is for one-tooth dentists. Historically\, most dentists believe one or both to be true. Today\, CAD/CAM dentistry is facilitating and even complimenting the comprehensive approach to patient care. From treatment planning esthetic\, occlusal\, structural and biological outcomes\, to more efficient and reliable restorative results\, the blending is not just a concept anymore. This course will help the modern practitioner see the benefit of digital and comprehensive care and how together they can create a practice that is fun\, comprehensive\, predictable\, and efficient. \nTHE SPEAKER \nAs a member of the Spear Education resident faculty\, Dr. Kwiecien serves as director of Spear Online\, responsible for creating and overseeing digital clinical content. He is also a member of the Spear faculty practice. Most recently\, Dr. Kwiecien served as assistant professor of restorative dentistry at Oregon Health and Sciences University School of Dentistry and director of the university’s faculty dental practice\, director of patient admissions\, and director of the urgent care clinic\, as well as course director of pre-clinical fixed prosthodontics and co-course director of advanced restorative concepts for third- and fourth-year students. Dr. Kwiecien’s appreciation for and dedication to high-level continuing education began with Dr. Frank Spear more than 13 years ago. He has completed the curriculum at the L.D. Pankey Institute\, has belonged for several years to a Tucker Gold Study Club\, and many additional accomplishments\, including a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. He has been a member of the Spear visiting faculty since its inception. Dr. Kwiecien is a past-president of the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry. He also maintains memberships in the American Dental Association\, Academy of Operative Dentistry\, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry\, American Equilibration Society\, American Academy of Sleep Medicine\, and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

SUMMARY:Come In and Catch It: Oral Pathology that Sticks! and Great Cases with New Faces
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. John Svirsky \nSponsored by Implant Direct \n  \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nCome In and Catch it: Oral Pathology that Sticks! \nThis is the perfect review course that covers the recognition\, diagnosis and treatment of the 25 soft tissue lesions that every dentist and hygienist should know and treat appropriately. A number of the entities only require recognition. The classic lesions that have been forgotten since school will be brought back to life and your diagnostic confidence will be re-energized. \nDr. Svirsky makes oral pathology fun! \n1. Demonstrate a logical approach to the diagnosis of oral lesions. \n2. Recognize and diagnose the more common soft tissue lesions/diseases found in a dental practice. \n3. Integrate therapeutic regimens used to treat selected oral diseases such as aphthous ulcerations\, herpes\, candidiasis\, angular cheilitis and lichen planus. \n4. Recognize leukoplakia and differentiate it from other white lesions \n5. Understand the malignant potential of various soft tissue diseases \nGreat Cases with New Faces \nThis new interactive course for 2016 will present a potpourri of interesting cases seen by me or emailed to me over the past few years. In this course participants learn how to describe a lesion\, develop a differential diagnosis and treat the condition. I will show how I approach cases and arrive at a diagnosis. The audience of course will help me to diagnose them as I play the patient. Some unusual “things” might pop up! A good time is to be had by all. \nObjectives: \n1. Develop a logical approach to the diagnosis of oral lesions. \n2. Learn to describe and develop a differential diagnosis of various clinical cases. \n3. Learn to treat selected oral diseases and distinguish “good from bad”. \nTHE SPEAKER \nDr. John Svirsky is a board certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond\, Virginia. He received his dental degree in 1973 from VCU and went on to complete a general practice residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Queens Hospital Center\, as well as an oral pathology residency at the Catholic Medical Center. He is currently a professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology and maintains a private practice in oral medicine and oral pathology. Dr. Svirsky has developed a broad background in research\, published numerous articles in the dental literature\, and earned a master’s degree in adult education. He is a sought after speaker with an international reputation as an informative and entertaining lecturer. Dr. Svirsky is an honorary member of the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society and has received a Presidential Citation from the American Dental Association for significant contributions to the health of the public and the profession of dentistry. In 2012 he received the William J. Gies Award from the Greater New York Dental Meeting for contributions to oral health. The MCV Alumni Association (MCVAA) of Virginia Commonwealth University has chosen Dr. Svirsky to receive the 2013 MCVAA Outstanding Alumnus Award. In 2015 Dr. Svirsky received the Distinguished Service Award from the Dawson Academy for advancement of the Dental Profession through Research\, Publication and Education and awarded an Honorary Membership in the American Academy of Oral Medicine.

SUMMARY:The Global Diagnosis - A New Vision of Dental Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. J. William Robbins \nSponsored by Muth and Mumma DSG Dental Laboratory \n  \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nWith the increased emphasis on interdisciplinary treatment in recent years\, the deficiencies associated with traditional methods of diagnosis and treatment planning have become more evident and problematic. Historically\, the treatment plan was primarily dictated by information provided by study casts which were mounted on a sophisticated articulator in centric relation. At that time in history\, the primary tools available for treating the complex restorative patient were functional crown lengthening surgery and increasing the vertical dimension of occlusion. The treatment plan was simply based on restorative space\, anterior tooth coupling and resistance and retention form of the final preparations\, with no focus on placing the teeth in the correct position in the face. Practitioners did not have access to advanced periodontal\, orthodontic\, orthognathic surgery and plastic surgery tools that are currently available. With the advent and common usage of these new treatment modalities\, the historical method of diagnosis and treatment planning is no longer adequately serving our profession. It is the purpose of this course to provide a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment planning the complex interdisciplinary dental patient with a common language that may be used by the orthodontist\, periodontist\, and oral and maxillofacial surgeon\, as well as the restorative dentist. The four Global Diagnoses which dictate all interdisciplinary treatment planning will be defined. A set of questions will then be presented which will aid the interdisciplinary team in the diagnosis and treatment planning of the complex dental patient. \nLearning Objectives – upon completion of this course the participant will be able to: \n1. Describe 4 Global Diagnoses \n2. Describe the “5 CORE Questions” with their corresponding treatment options \n3. Complete a Global diagnosis form which will lead to a comprehensive diagnosis \n4. Communicate with the interdisciplinary team \nTHE SPEAKER \nJ. William Robbins\, D.D.S.\, M.A.\, maintains a full-time private practice and is Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Dental School in l973. He completed a rotating internship at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leavenworth\, Kansas and a 2-year General Practice Residency at the V.A. Hospital in San Diego\, California. Dr. Robbins has published over 80 articles\, abstracts\, and chapters on a wide range of dental subjects and has lectured in the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, South America\, Europe\, Middle East and Africa. He coauthored a textbook\, Fundamentals of Operative Dentistry – A Contemporary Approach\, which is published by Quintessence\, and is in its 4rd edition. He recently co-authored a new textbook\, Global Diagnosis – A New Vision of Dental Diagnosis and Treatment Planning\, which is also published by Quintessence. He has won several awards including the Presidential Teaching Award at the University Of Texas Health Science Center\, the 2002 Texas Dentist of the Year Award\, the 2003 Honorary Thaddeus V. Weclew Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry\, the 2010 Saul Schluger Award given by the Seattle Study Club\, the Southwest Academy of Restorative Dentistry 2015 President’s Award\, and the 2016 Academy of Operative Dentistry Award of Excellence. SUMMARY:Sleep Disordered Breathing and Its Implications for Dentistry
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Paul McLornan\nSponsored by Thayer Dental Lab\nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nThere is a growing body of scientific evidence that associates Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) with Bruxism\, GERD and TMD. The multiple health consequences of untreated SDB have long been known and now include an increased risk of developing and dying from certain forms of cancer. Approximately 80% of all SDB breathing patients are undiagnosed and hence untreated. Putting together these facts in 2016 Dr McLornan believes we as dentists can choose to ignore SDB in our patients but it will not ignore our patient’s overall health\, their dentitions nor our dentistry. We must screen our patients for SDB. During this presentation we will discuss \n1.) What is SDB? \n2.) The health consequences of untreated SDB \n3.) How our medical colleagues are currently diagnosing and treating SDB \n4.) SDB in children \n5.) The associations between SDB and Bruxism\, TMD and GERD \n6.) A suggested screening protocol for SDB in the dental office \n7.) How to build and maintain physician referrals \n8.) How to get paid for treating SDB with Mandibular Repositioning Devices. \nTHE SPEAKER \nDr. Paul McLornan is a board certified Prosthodontist in private practice in San Antonio\, Texas. He is also an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School. He is a member of the graduate faculty of the UTHSCSA Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences\, where he serves as a research adviser to a number of OSA related studies. Dr. McLornan obtained his dental degree from Queens University\, Belfast and his specialty certificate in Prosthodontics from UTHSCSA. The treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) using oral appliances was the subject of his master’s of science research project during his residency and has been a special interest of his since. Dr. McLornan has lectured extensively at local\, national\, and international dental meetings and study clubs. He is on the teaching faculty of the Dental Institute of Sleep Medicine and is a member of the ADA’s Committee on Sleep Related Breathing Disorders. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. He is also a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine\, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Equilibration Society.

SUMMARY:Managing Esthetic Failures on Anterior Implants: Etiologies and Treatment Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Stephen Chu \nSynopsis:\nEsthetic failures associated with dental implants in the esthetic zone can be one of the greatest challenges facing the dental team. These dilemmas can present themselves as either midfacial\, interdental\, or combination defect types. A significant part of treatment therapy revolves  around correction of these esthetic defects due to either poor treatment planning\, implant placement\, and restorative contours. Surgical\, orthodontics\, and restorative treatment planning options and techniques to address these esthetic deficiencies will be presented in a sequential manner from simple periodontal-restorative solutions to more complex case types involving orthodontics\, periodontics\, and prosthetics. \nLearning Outcomes:\nAfter this presentation\, the attendee should be able to:\n• Know the potential of hard and soft tissue correction around aesthetically challenged anterior implants\n• Know when adjunctive orthodontic therapy should be employed\n• Know when a prosthetic restorative solution is the best treatment plan option \nTHE SPEAKER \nStephen J. Chu maintains an academic appointment in the Ashman Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry as a Clinical Associate Professor. He also has a private practice in fixed prosthodontics\, aesthetic\, and implant dentistry in New York City.\nDr. Chu has published extensively in the dental literature and has given lectures nationally and internationally on the subjects of esthetic\, restorative\, and implant dentistry.\nDr. Chu is on the editorial review board of several peer-reviewed dental journals.\nHe is the recipient of the Peter Scharer distinguished lecturer award from the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.

SUMMARY:The 4 Riddles\, the Patient\, Technical\, Behavioral\, and Financial Riddles
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Gary DeWood\nSponsored by Academy Financial \nIn this interactive program Gary will discuss the 4 riddles that all dental teams must solve to achieve success. The Patient Riddle\, the Technical Riddle\, the Behavioral Riddle\, and the Financial Riddle. \nTHE PATIENT RIDDLE – Who is this person\, why are they here\, why me\, why now\, what are they after\, what are their expectations? ….. Knowing the answers to these questions enables the team to connect and to serve. Service is the key to creating missionaries for your practice. \nTHE TECHNICAL RIDDLE – What is the appropriate solution to the problem this patient presents with? There is only one correct diagnosis – there are multiple solutions. How does the conscientious dentist arrive at the appropriate one for each patient? \nTHE BEHAVIORAL RIDDLE – If it were all about telling patients what was in their interest and doing it every dental practice would be infinitely successful. Helping patients come to ownership of a problem for which they desire a solution\, or helping them see and understand their health in a different way requires behavioral skills and practice. \nTHE FINANCIAL RIDDLE – Unless the practice is a FREE dental clinic everyone involved needs to make a living. It is the responsibility of the leader to see that the practice is profitable. It’s not possible to just do the dentistry – you must get paid for it. It’s not possible to leave it to your accountant to tell you how expenses are – you must monitor it. The dentist has 3 jobs in most practices\, dentist\, manager\, and entrepreneur – all of us do number 1\, some of us do number 2\, few of us do number 3. \n  \nSpeaker: \nGary DeWood has been practicing general dentistry for 32 years\, focusing the majority of his time on teaching for the past 10 years after leaving his private practice in Pemberville\, Ohio.  He served as Clinical Director at the Pankey Institute for 5 years and held appointments as Assistant Clinical Professor at The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Associate Professor at The University of Tennessee College of Dentistry prior to joining Frank Spear’s education company\, The Seattle Institute\, in 2008 as its President. With the merger of The Seattle Institute and The Scottsdale Center for Dentistry in 2009\, he relocated to Phoenix\, Arizona and assumed his present position with the newly formed Spear Education.  He and orthodontist wife\, Cheryl\, have 3 children\, the youngest of whom is currently pursuing a career in dentistry as a student at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine in Glendale\, Arizona. Gary lectures internationally on esthetics\, occlusion\, appliance therapy\, the business of dentistry\, and making connections with patients. He is an active member of: Central Arizona Dental Society\, Arizona Dental Association\, American Dental Association\, Academy of General Dentistry\, American Equilibration Association\, American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics\, and American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. \n
