Course Description –

Accurate and timely diagnosis of oral premalignant lesions and oral cancer represents an important aspect of both general dental and specialty-based practice. During this course, participants will learn to recognize the variable presentations of oral precancerous lesions and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Oral premalignant lesions including leukoplakia, erythroplakia, proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, actinic cheilitis, and lichen planus will be discussed. In addition, biopsy techniques, including site selection, will be reviewed. 

Speaker – Dr. Scott Peters

Dr. Scott Peters is an Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Geisinger Medical Center. He received his B.A. in History from Columbia University, his D.D.S. from Columbia University, and completed his post-graduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and the recipient of the Academy’s prestigious William G. Shafer Award. Dr. Peters has published in numerous journals including The Journal of the American Dental Association, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology (Triple O), Journal of Endodontics, Head and Neck Pathology, and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, among others. He is also one of co-authors of the 8th edition of the Oral Pathology for the Dental Hygienist textbook. Dr. Peters has an oral pathology biopsy service based out of Geisinger Medical Laboratories and a clinical oral pathology/oral medicine practice at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
